School failure is a very present reality in Mozambique and there is a constant effort to reinforce, outside of school, the content taught during classes. ATACA’s team of local volunteers provides this support to children and young people in vulnerable situations (many of them living in orphanages or foster homes) in Quelimane, Mozambique. Every week they all work together in the hope of consolidating knowledge and improving grades and skills, combating academic failure and investing in the future.
With regard to education, Mozambique has come a long way with visible progress, but there are still many weaknesses, both in access to education (it is estimated that over 1.2 million school-age children are out of school), as well as the quality of teaching and the conditions that exist in schools. For example, recent data shows that less than 10% of third grade students have basic reading skills and that 62 is the student-teacher ratio in primary education.
