ATACA is a non-profit social solidarity association with the status of Non-Governmental Organization for Development (NGDO), founded in 2006.
It has its headquarters in Porto and develops projects in Mozambique since its foundation and more recently, since 2018, also in Guinea-Bissau. These countries are at the bottom of the Human Development Index table (2019 data), where they are respectively ranked 181st and 175th out of a total of 189 countries in the world.
ATACA has no political or religious affiliation, and above all seeks to involve different volunteers and partners in its actions and projects. The main guiding objective is therefore to contribute to a better and more responsible human development in the countries where it operates.
Thus, as a volunteer-based organization, ATACA is made up of a team of around 30 volunteers in Portugal. These volunteers dedicate part of their time each week to running the association, where they are responsible for administrative, logistical and support tasks for the projects carried out in Africa.
ATACA also relies permanently on Portuguese volunteers on the ground, who monitor and develop these projects in conjunction with the headquarters in Portugal. In addition to these volunteers who go on missions, there are also local volunteers in the countries where ATACA operates. All in all, around 4,000 hours of volunteering take place at ATACA over the course of the year.
Since 2006, ATACA has helped improve the lives and development of more than 900 children and young people ,each of whom has been supported for an average of five years, so that they can follow as complete an educational path as possible.
This support came about thanks to the involvement of more than 1,000 tutorsmostly Portuguese, who have funded the education and development of these children and young people on a monthly basis.
We believe that together we can change the world!
